Recycle your books at Garlic City Books

Garlic City Books "buys" books. If you have books that need a new home, bring 'em on down. If you bring us books that we want to sell in our store, we will give you store credit for you to use on other used books in the store. That means that you can do something with all those books you have stacked by the bed or next to the couch and still get great reads for cheap! This is what Garlic City Books is all about!

** please limit the amount of books for trade to 2 shopping bags (or equivalent amount) per visit - we are not able to process more than that in a timely manner. thank you!!

How does it work?

-We do not pay cash for books, we give store credit in return for the books we buy.

-We will credit your account with store credit at 30% of our sales price (which is typically half of the standard retail price) for any book that we accept.

-Store credit is good only on other used books in our store (credit cannot be used for new books, magazines, ice cream, bookmarks etc.).

-We must still collect sales tax from you for books purchased with store credit. Meaning, all you will have to pay is the sales tax amount (9.25% of sales price) when your store credit covers the price of the book.

-If one of our book buyers is in the store when you bring in your books, we will probably be able to process them while you wait. If not, you can drop them off and we will contact you once we've processed them. (Depending on our backlog, sometimes we get to them within a few days, sometimes it may take up to a few weeks.)

-Store credit is stored in our computer system in your customer file. If you do not immediately use your credit or use only a partial amount, it will remain in our system for use at a later date.

-The books we choose to buy are chosen based on condition, demand, and our current stock.

-We do not buy books that are badly worn or in poor condition.

-We will not buy most hardcover fiction or non-fiction books, unless it is a current title or otherwise collectible.

-We do not buy Encyclopedias, magazines, or travel or other guide books from 2008 or older.

-We will buy some textbooks.

A note on Rare & Collectible books: We are not a rare book dealer. We do not yet as a business and as book buyers posses the experience and judgment that it requires to deal in collectibles, nor is that our current intent.

Garlic City Books Book Club

The Garlic City Books book club meets at 7pm on the third Tuesday of each month. Read the book and join us to discuss it. We will have copies of the book club book available for purchase new at 20% off - and a few used copies if we're lucky.

Why shop Indie?

When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

The Economy
  • Spend $100 at a local and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.
  • Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.
  • More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.
The Environment
  • Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.
The Community
  • Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.
  • Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.
  • More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.
